A new route we are trying out to get away from some of the crowds include a visit to the magnificent and lesser-known site of Mayapan, a nearby crumbling and photogenic hacienda and a dark cave cenote (no bats though!) This tour is good for both cruisers and folks visiting and staying in Merida.

This building at Mayapan remarkably resembles the 'observatory' at Chichen Itza. There is a reason for that.

If you like history and photography, you might want to spend more time here than normal. So many angles, so many crumbling bits and pieces.

The cenote is dark and peaceful place. No bats, no swallows, no snakes. The water is deliciously refreshing.
